Learning Shopify development while working remotely, with Zarko Stojadinovic
Being one of a few fully remote employees comes with its own, very serious complications. On top of that, being completely new to a huge, complex platform such as Shopify is scary. Try learning it as you go along!
What’s on your mind, Zarko?
How did you first learn about Superawesome?
I found the first information about the company on social networks - primarily Linkedin. The first contact with people from Superawesome was with one of the partners in the company, Milan Stosic, with whom I have a mutual friend. He is the main reason we started talking about potential cooperation. A couple of conversations about Superawesome projects were sufficient as an introduction, and after that everything went smoothly and spontaneously.
What have you gained from working at Superawesome?
In the first place, a new challenge every day. I have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of Shopify, at the same time being productive, and contributing to the projects I work on. The opportunity to collaborate with and learn from senior developers with a lot of experience and a lot of patience, who are top experts, but above all great people ready to assist you at any moment. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the opportunity for further improvement.
How do you spend your time outside of the office?
Currently, due to the coronavirus pandemic, I mostly spend time at home. Like most developers, I enjoy gaming, and I try to spend as much time with my family as much as possible.
When the weather and my schedule allow, I use every opportunity to go skiing and enjoy the snow.
In addition, in my spare time, I try to learn about new technologies and keep up with trends.
What’s your next step, or a few goals you’d like to accomplish in life, or while with Superawesome?
In the future, above all, I want to continue to advance professionally. Superawesome provides great opportunities for that and I am ready to take full advantage of those opportunities. Everything is directed toward contributing to the development of the company and improving myself along the way. Personally, I want to travel again as much as possible.
Can you describe the challenges of learning on the job — especially as a remote employee — and the support you are getting? What do you wish would be different? What could be improved?
Certainly, the biggest challenge is that there is no face-to-face with colleagues and that complete communication takes place through online communication platforms.
Fortunately, even before the current situation required such a way of work and cooperation, Superawesome had a system set up and a well-coordinated team that overcomes these problems easily and efficiently.
Personally, the support I receive from colleagues, team leaders, partners in the company is, I often feel, unlimited. This makes work easier in every sense and reduces pressure.
Colleagues are always ready to help with everything, from advice related to the development itself to recommendations for a movie, book, TV show, game (they haven't made a mistake here yet).
Do you recall any embarrassing fun moments at work?
I can't recall a specific situation. However, it is definitely worth mentioning the small competition within the dev team. It all comes down to the ranking of developers depending on who collects more positive emoticons from clients. It generates constant banter because the list changes daily and no one misses the opportunity to troll.
If you could switch your job with anyone else within Superawesome, whose job would you want?
I would switch jobs with Marija Stevanovic, Operations Officer, but only for a day. I would like to see what it is like to be involved in all the work of Superawesome at all times. But, still, only for a day :}}
