It’s time to meet one of our lead software architects, Max Gustafsson!
I’m a software architect and manager for our ALM services. I help our teams and clients with designing the systems we develop and I’m always on the lookout for new technologies and methods that can improve what we offer and what we deliver. Managing our ALM services is a fairly recent role where we can offer our clients, in short, infrastructure to run their applications + great people + help when they need it—as a service.
I started my career in software at QueensLab and one of the best things about working here is the lack of any kind of ceiling (even literally for a short period of time).
I usually move quite quickly and QueensLab has always been able to take the next step in my career. It also hasn't hurt that our management has a great professional network and encourages us to share it with the rest of us.
Definitely the people. We’re all different at QueensLab but we share a love for the trade and are passionate about what we do.
Hardly a day goes by when I don't learn something new from a colleague or a problem is looked at from a different angle.

I think that life, both our professional and personal lives, go in waves, and I am very lucky to have friends and family who see it the same way.
Sometimes I have to work a lot and may not have as much time for my friends and family as I would like. Luckily, work here is quite flexible, so I can always make up for it when things settle down. My friends and family know that I have chosen this work and I am glad that they remain loyal to me.
From a professional point of view, I would say when the team has a problem, has figured out how to proceed and is now actively working to fix it.
I just find that very motivating, and in my opinion, that's when the team is really compliant and performing at its best.
Outside of work, it's probably a tie between spending time with my fiancé and discussing an irrelevant piece of technology over a beer.
Outside of work, I do quite a bit of programming, usually something pretty meaningless, but with a technology that interests me. The first few days with a new technology are the most exciting for me. When I'm not programming, I like to start projects around the house and sometimes I finish them. I also spend time with friends, often in a bar, and go hiking with my fiancé.
Hamburgers, without hesitation.
In my opinion, it’s just a supreme way of consuming sustenance.
It's versatile and you can make a burger out of anything. Two slices of French toast and an American pancake in the middle make a good breakfast burger.
Maybe that’s cheating, who knows.
Max loves having an outdoor adventure
Apart from the generally forbidden things (a boat, a satellite phone, Survivorman, etc.) I would take a way to make a fire, a knife and a rope.
There are few things better for the soul than a fire to keep you safe at night, and the versatility of the knife and rope would make it a nice pair in my opinion.
I might leave out the rope and bring some fake dinosaur bones just in case, but at least I'll confuse some future explorers.
I spent a year backpacking in New Zealand and it's definitely the best holiday I've ever had. I love the country and the people. The fact that you can start in the north in an almost tropical climate, travel through volcanic landscapes, tundras, vineyards, glaciers and rainforest in such a small geographical area is just incredible. I would highly recommend it if anyone asks, and I will certainly return one day.
We’re delighted that Max decided to join Queenslab – it’s been great having him on board! If you have any questions or want to get to know Max or one of his colleagues from the software architect team, we are happy to put you in touch. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
