Jared representing Nona at a Western Cape Tech Hub launch
For starters, I knew a few people in the business and already held not only their talents and abilities in high regard, but their values and worldviews too. Naturally, I was eager to work with them.
I’m also generally interested in technology and being a part of Nona allows me to ‘scratch that itch’ on a daily basis. Tech, particularly software, is an arena where a small group of individuals can punch above their weight, with limited resources. I find this incredibly exciting! This is why so many people are drawn to this industry.
Lastly, I believe that I can make a positive impact and deliver value to this business. Nona’s remarkable culture, enabled by trust, honesty and little politicking, keeps me happily planted in a business that never rests on its laurels – we’re always trying to improve, both as a business and as individuals.
Sometimes you’ve got to knuckle down and put in the hours, to hone your craft and better the business. Other times you need to step back, celebrate your wins and recharge your batteries. I think we manage this interplay pretty well.
Look, my day usually varies drastically from one day to the next, especially because we’re a small business. Managing the finances of the business is one of my primary focuses each day. Setting budgets, paying taxes, managing cash flow, reporting on performance and overseeing accounting all fall into this.
Contracting and general risk management is another hat I wear every day: contracting with clients and suppliers, drafting and implementing internal policy and managing third-party relationships, such as with insurers. I also help set policy and administer internal IT and HR functions.
The last thing I’m balancing is contributing to and engaging in our framework, to constantly develop and implement our business strategy. These dynamic demands on my time keep me on my feet – but that’s how I like it!
The first thing is to be that business that people want to work at and with. When they hear Nona, their first thought is “Oh, I’d love to work with them on something” or “I wish I worked there!” I’d also like to see the release of a product or two of our own, that really adds value to people’s lives.
Of course, as Financial Director, I’d also like to triple revenues, while retaining profitability, to ultimately enrich the lives of our employees – both financially and personally.

I enjoy spending time with my family, preferably with good food and wine. I also enjoy running, playing video games, and reading in my down time.
Success is being happy and content. This answer feels like cheating a little bit though. Because what makes me happy changes from time to time. Sometimes it’s taking time off, while other times it’s achieving new goals in my career.
I’m close to my colleagues at Nona and see many of them as close friends, which can be dangerous admittedly. What has helped me in recent times is the acknowledgement that when running a business your work will never be done, and you have to accept that.
You’re always going to be faced with new challenges in business, as in life. Accepting that there will always be more to do allows me to not be continuously overwhelmed and enjoy the journey a little better.

I used to be an auditor, which, while typically being seen as a really boring job, I found to be really interesting. You get to see the inner workings of all kinds of different businesses, their challenges and how they tackle them. It’s a really valuable experience.
