Time to meet the Web Developer at 7code, Doru!

Why did you join 7code, and what has kept you here?

I was an intern in a small remote only company for almost 3 months, but it was enough for me to realize it was time for me to move on to something more challenging in a junior position where I could finally kickstart my web development career.

The opportunity presented one day unexpectedly and without a second thought I anxiously took on the hiring process as it was either this or another 3 months of internship where I clearly did not feel like I belong.

The continuous learning and support from the more experienced developers has made this journey really exciting and it continues to be.

What drew you to Web Development? Have you always worked in software developer roles?

Little over a year ago I had no idea that I'll be working in software development. I was very unhappy at the time with my job and for 3 years it felt like I was consciously wasting time by doing something which I wasn't gaining any skills or learning nothing new from, but I was too comfortable or lazy to do something about it so I knew something needed to change.

Throughout the years 'programming' would come up in conversations with people so often that I was constantly thinking about it, but for some reason I was under the impression that only very 'smart' people or people that did well in school were capable of learning this stuff.

When I finally got to a point where I was close to a breakdown, I decided to push myself out of the comfort zone and take on a 7 months bootcamp in web development. There wasn't really any specific reason for choosing JavaScript, other than "it's popular", but somehow it turned out it wasn't a bad choice, as I was instantly attracted by what you could do with it. In fact, I liked it so much that along with the strong motivation of wanting to change my career, I spent most of my weekends inside learning it, outside the bootcamp hours.

How do you spend your time outside of the office?

I might not be the most active person there is. On some days, spending 8 hours in front of a screen doing this type of work can be mentally exhausting, and on those days I prefer to just go home and chill on my couch drinking a beer and watching some Netflix. At night, no matter my energy levels, I go for a 30 minutes run to keep in shape. I feel like doing some sort of physical activity is very much necessary when your job requires you to sit down.

On the days I somehow escape the feeling described above I usually just go for a walk with any friend I find available and on some of the weekends I might set up a mountain journey.

Did I mention I like parties? Yes, I do, but I try to keep them limited, as in, no more than 2 a month for obvious reasons :D

Are you an iPhone or android type of person?

Nowadays I'm definitely an iPhone type of person. I could even say an Apple type of person because if I am to choose between Apple and any other brand, I will go with Apple most of the times. I really like the way they design their products and the quality never let me down. I've been using an Iphone for about 5 years and I do not see myself going back to Android. However, growing up, I always had an Android. Probably also because I could not afford an iPhone.

What do you like most about 7code?

I can definitely appreciate the freedom of choosing whether I want to come into the office or work from home. I feel like this should be the standard nowadays if we learned anything from the covid pandemic.

In your opinion, what are the hallmark traits of a great Web Developer?

Being a Web Developer can be very challenging and on some days you might have a really bad case of impostor syndrome. I think one way to overcome this is to really be patient and persisting as it can get very frustrating not seeing the solution to a problem you might be facing.
